ÇAAM and Ulupınar Observatory 21st Anniversary Event was Held
The 21st anniversary event of Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University Astrophysics Research Center (ÇAAM) and Ulupınar Observatory was held at Ulupınar Observatory on Friday, May 19, 2023.
The event was held with the participation of our Rector Prof. Sedat MURAT, Observatory Director Prof. Faruk SOYDUGAN, research center fellows, guest faculty members, students and guests from different departments. It started with the introduction of the observatory. Center and Observatory Director Prof. Faruk SOYDUGAN informed the participants about the current status of the research center and observatory, research topics and scientific outputs achieved.
The center members who have contributed to the Observatory for the past 20 years since its establishment and conducted research within the center, including Prof. Faruk SOYDUGAN, Prof. Ahmet ERDEM, Prof. Caner ÇİÇEK, Prof. Esin SOYDUGAN, Prof. İbrahim BULUT, Assoc. Prof. Derya SÜRGİT, Assoc. Prof. Ahmet BULUT, Dr. Mehmet TÜYSÜZ, and Dr. Afşar KABAŞ, were presented with certificates of appreciation. The daughter of the late Yusuf KEMERLİ, who donated a portion of the observatory's land during its establishment, Dr. Yonca YİĞİT, and her husband Prof. Murat YİĞİT were also presented with a plaque of gratitude.
The founding director of the Observatory and Research Center, Prof. Osman DEMİRCAN, shared his thoughts on the establishment story of the Observatory and the contributions made through an online connection. Additionally, during the online session, former fellows of the observatory Prof. Volkan BAKIŞ and Prof. Hicran BAKIŞ, faculty members of the Department of Space Sciences and Technologies at the Akdeniz University, reminisced about the early days of the Observatory and shared their memories with the participants.
Following the seminar on "Exoplanet Discoveries" presented by Dr. Mehmet TÜYSÜZ, the anniversary of the establishment was celebrated with the cutting of a birthday cake and the serving of pilaf. Solar observations were conducted at the beginning of the event using a solar telescope. Moreover, the telescopes used for scientific research were introduced, and Dr. Afşar KABAŞ delivered a seminar on "The Sky and Motion in the Sky" during the event.
